MESSAGE FROM THE EDITOR

They say the walls have ears, but maybe something else is hiding there.

The writer John Irving wrote a beautiful book on a father's response to a child who was afraid of what lurked between the walls. Irrational fears, unlike those that prompted ESFI-Canada to launch a campaign on electrical safety for homeowners. The figures ESFI-Canada used to launch this campaign, which show that home renovations often neglect the electrical work, are scary and this time with reason. Good reading!

ESFI-Canada Encourages Homeowners to Check Behind the Wall

By Cathy Chernysh
In the fall 2014 the Electrical Safety Foundation International - Canada (ESFI-Canada) defined a strategic direction that focused on addressing a significant gap in electrical safety. Existing data on electrical fires and documentation of concerns regarding electrical wiring in Canadian homes has resulted in the launch of a 2014 spring campaign that encourages homeowners to Check Behind the Wall.

At the front end, ESFI-C worked to gather a consistent data set from homeowners that represented a diverse national perspective on electrical safety concerns and behaviour. To focus our research efforts, we targeted homeowners who either conducted a renovation in 2013 or planned to undertake one in 2014. Read More
